Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free. This means you do not need to buy a fishing licence if you want to fish during:

    • Father’s Day Weekend (June 14–15, 2025)
    • Family Fishing Week (June 28–July 6, 2025)

Free fishing periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. While fishing during a free fishing period you must:

    • follow conservation licence catch limits
    • obey size limits and sanctuaries
    • follow the fishing regulations
    • carry a permit or identification card issued by the provincial or federal government, showing your name and date of birth

Organized by the Steenburg Lake Community Association.

We invite all property owners on Steenburg Lake to help us identify where Eurasian Water-Milfoil (EWM) exists in the lake, and any other invasive species such as zebra mussels and banded mystery snails – both of which have been identified in the lake previously.

Eurasian Water-Milfoil (EWM) , an invasive species, is spreading in Steenburg Lake.  If left unchecked, EWM has the potential to choke out native water plants and pose a risk to boaters and swimmers.

    Here’s how you can help:

    1. Survey your shoreline out to about 3m deep

    2. Collect and photograph a sample of any plant that might be EWM

    3. Collect and photograph samples of any mussels and snails

    4. Upload those photos, along with the GPS coordinates of where they were taken, to EDDMapS.

EDDMapS, or the Early Detection and Distribution Mapping System, is a web-based mapping system for documenting invasive species distribution in Canada. Reports go directly to experts in the field, who will review all reports and verify that the reported species is correctly identified before it gets added to a distribution map: you might even get an email asking for additional photos to help confirm.

Submit your photos using one of the following:

    • EDDMapS app on iPhone (download from the APP store https://apps.apple.com/us/app/eddmaps/id1497390237)

    • EDDMapS app Android (download at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bugwood.eddmapsone&hl=en_US&gl=US&pli=1)

    • EDDMapS Online: https://www.eddmaps.org/report/

    • Step by step instructions for EDDMapShttps://www.eddmaps.org/about/step_by_step.html

    • NOTE: There are many sections to fill out, however, this is not always possible. The most important thing is to get good photos and note your location. Once those have been uploaded to EDDMapS they will be triaged and checked by an expert who will determine if the ID is correct, therefore all reporting is good whether you are confident in your identification or not. Here is a link to what happens once you’ve submitted a report: https://www.invasivespeciescentre.ca/isc-blog-post-what-happens-when-you-report/

Organized by the Steenburg Lake Community Association (SLCA).

Celebrate Canada Day in classic cottage style by turning your dock into a show of true patriot love! Participants will decorate their docks with red and white flair—think flags, lights, inflatables, maple leaf themes, and more. Boaters and paddlers can cruise around the lake to view the patriotic displays and vote for their favourite decorated dock.

    How It Works:

    1. Dock Registration:

       - Cottagers sign up by June 20 to be included on the official *Dock Hop Map*.

       - Register for this event here on the website or text/call  Selena at 905 441 3202. Once you are registered your dock receives a number which you can make up a sign for and place somewhere visible on your dock.

    2. Decorating Rules:

       - Theme: Canadian pride! (Be creative—you can use lights, music, costumes, and interactive displays!)

       - All decorations should be up by 12:30 PM on Saturday June 28th, 2025

    3. Tour & Vote:

       - all weekend, boaters tour the lake and admire the creativity and cheer on your neighbours. Get the Dock Hop Map with dock numbers and a Spotify playlist of Canadian hits to listen to while you cruise the lake. Link will be here when ready.

       - Voters submit their top 3 favourite docks via website or at the voters box at the boat launch.

-Dock Photo Contest: Snap pics of your dock and submit to our website for bonus prizes

    4. Winners Announced:

       - the winners will be announced July 1st at the Ice cream Sundae event

-Floating Judges Panel: Sunday afternoon a panel of judges will cruise the lake to give points that will help determine the winners
