Four times a year, Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free. This means you do not need to buy a fishing licence if you want to fish during:

    • Family Fishing Week (June 28–July 6, 2025)

Free fishing periods remind us of the value of Ontario’s recreational fishery, and the importance of keeping it healthy for future generations. While fishing during a free fishing period you must:

    • follow conservation licence catch limits
    • obey size limits and sanctuaries
    • follow the fishing regulations
    • carry a permit or identification card issued by the provincial or federal government, showing your name and date of birth

There's lots to see and do around Steenburg Lake

Most of the time, sitting outside at the lake with a nice cold beverage or a good book is more than enough. Other times though, you might be looking for a break from cooking dinner or wanting to explore the surrounding area for something a little more involved. There is so much to sip, see and experience in this region surrounding Steenburg Lake.

Have you stopped in yet at St. Ola’s Station close by over on Highway 62? It offers a place to refuel and stock up on snacks. Just a bit further South you can take a break from cooking and enjoy a delicious meal at Rustic Roadside Restaurant. To the North, just a short drive away on Highway 620, is The Old Hastings Mercantile and Gallery featuring Canadian arts and crafts, toys, cottage-themed gifts and more. Then continue West into Coe Hill and enjoy a homemade meal at The Monarch and The Milkweed café. Then across the road pickup something to BBQ from The Barn Chefs, then grab a coffee and a treat at The Edge Café before you head back to the Lake.

Also, did you know there’s professional original theatre nearby in Bancroft? Operated by the Tweed and Company Theatre, a local registered charity, they produce original Canadian theatre and operate out of the Bancroft Village Playhouse. Visit their website TweedandCompany.com too see their calendar of upcoming shows and to purchase tickets.

This is just a small sampling of what there is to see and do across Hastings County. There’s tons more to explore at our website VisitHastings.ca    There you’ll find information on the many fun, rural and locally loved events that happen all year long.
