Steenburg Lake’s water level is measured at a culvert at Bass Creek by the public beach on Steenburg Lake North Road. The gage was installed by Crowe Valley Conservation Authority (CVCA).
In the Crowe Valley, stop logs are used as part of water control structures to manage water levels, primarily in lakes and rivers. These logs are manually placed or removed to adjust the height of dams, affecting water levels for various purposes like flood control, recreational activities, and water storage.
CVCA has set two stop logs as the benchmark of 500 mm for Steenburg Lake: 11.5 inches from the bottom of the culvert. There are differing views on how many stop logs are appropriate to maintain the lake level.
Some property owners prefer high water to support boating and docking at their shore. Others prefer low water to protect the shore from erosion and to enjoy their shoreline beach area. Others just want consistency.
